Santa Fe Foodies Restaurant Reviews

Review by Susan Crowe

Joe’s Dining is just about the closest you get in Santa Fe to the real deal of best comfort food no matter where you are from. For this New York City transplant, Joe's Dining is always spot on with elevated classics made from scratch using organic, locally grown and locally sourced, grass fed and finished ingredients. They have that "it" factor that comforts me from within and slowly nourishes with a want to lick that plate clean finish.

Joe's appetizers and daily blue plate specials are my usual go-to. For instance, the Atlantic Codfish and Chips (beer-battered and sided with perfect crispy slaw), Avocado Stuffed with Shrimp and Blue Crab (my Maryland friends would be so impressed), Smoked Scottish Salmon (thinly sliced with capers, onions and horseradish), Fried Oysters (with spicy-dip Cajun remoulade sauce), Manhattan Clam Chowder (thick and chunky), and Chicken Souvlaki on pita with adorable mouth watering latkes.

However, like everyone else, I do crave Joe's burgers, my fav is the Shepherd's organic Greek Lamb Burger. Other favorites include the BBQ Brisket Sandwich, this jewel is house-smoked and slow roasted to perfection. I also recommend Joe's Pizza, hand stretched fermented dough and house-made fresh mozzarella with heirloom tomatoes, a.k.a. margarita style. Plus, all the best toppings pizza snobs have come to expect from New Yorkers. By the way, I fully expect to add to my greatest hits list after future visits.

Naturally, I had to give into temptation and ventured out into the main course entree menu, and true to form, I have a new favorite- the Fettuccine Trifolati. It is a dreamy creamy trio of gourmet mushrooms ( shiitake, portobello, oyster) sauteed with garlic and parsley in a white cream sauce topped with shaved Reggiano, which paired beautifully with a Russian River Valley Chardonnay.

Joe's Dining has a carefully selected beer and wine list and the cocktails are over the top with locally sourced spirits- try the Old Fashioned made with Taos Lightening Rye Whiskey or the Lavender Pomegranate Lemonade made with Hollow Spirit Vodka.

For Sunday brunch, try the Tequila Sunrise or Margarita made with Red River Agave Spirits paired with a plate of Cowboy Jack, organic eggs over easy with two slices of crispy bacon, two blue organic corn pancakes and home fries.

Definitely leave room for dessert, you can thank me later. Joe's Dining has the best desserts on the planet; Lemon Meringue Pie, New York Style Cheese Cake, Bourbon Apricot Pecan Pie, and Espresso or Hazelnut Truffles.

Joe's Dining is open for dine-in or take out, (located on Rodeo Road at Zia Road). If you get the chance to meet Joe, thank him from all of us. Trust me, you can't go wrong. Check out their website and newsletter about locally sustainable food and nutrition at
